Study Shows Million-Euro Impact of IFSC Climbing World Cup Innsbruck

With the IFSC Climbing World Cup Innsbruck 2025 (June 23 to 29), this week sees the major climbing highlight of the year. The World Cup week in Innsbruck-Tyrol is considered an international benchmark and the most prestigious stop on the global calendar. This is confirmed by an independent impact analysis carried out as part of the Tyrolean sports event strategy by the Sports Research Lab Tyrol at the University of Innsbruck. The conclusion: the IFSC Climbing World Cup Innsbruck 2024 was not only a sporting highlight but also a significant boost for the region.

The analysis demonstrates a regional economic impact of over five million euros, generated directly and indirectly by visitors, athletes, and media representatives — many times the amount of public funding invested. More than 37,000 overnight stays were recorded during the event, with two-thirds accounted for by out-of-town visitors.

KVÖ focuses on sustainable regional partnerships

The results confirm the strategic approach of the Austrian Climbing Federation (KVÖ), which for years has relied on close cooperation with regional partners such as the city, the province, tourism associations, and local businesses for the home World Cup. This close collaboration pays off both economically and socially and is a key element of KVÖ’s sustainable event strategy.

“Innsbruck is hosting a climbing World Cup for the fifth time in a row this year — and that fills us with great pride. World-class elite sport, great emotions, and plenty of action are guaranteed. As the Sports Councillor of Tyrol, I am particularly pleased that we can welcome around 500 of the world’s best athletes to a region where climbing is deeply rooted. My thanks go to the dedicated organising team, all helpers, as well as the many partners and sponsors. I wish all participants great success and the visitors exciting and unforgettable competitions,” says Deputy Governor and Sports Councillor Philip Wohlgemuth.

Impact beyond the event itself

The “open-air arena” at the Innsbruck Climbing Centre drew 17,000 fans last year. The infrastructure is especially valued by athletes. Even outside of World Cup week, the importance of the Innsbruck Climbing Centre is clear: international athletes spend on average an additional 14 days per year in Innsbruck to prepare for competitions — another benefit for the region.

“The IFSC Climbing World Cup Innsbruck is a prime example of how sporting events can provide a strong boost for Tyrol’s tourism. The high level of international media exposure clearly demonstrates the impact such an event can have. Images of the World Cup are seen around the globe, while Tyrol is positioned as a modern, sports-oriented Alpine region with an authentic connection to climbing, which is deeply rooted here. This combination of top performance and lifestyle is a powerful message that we communicate together,” says Karin Seiler, CEO of Tirol Werbung.

Top ratings and international reputation

Both spectators and athletes were extremely satisfied with the event: over 95 percent rated the World Cup in Innsbruck as “very good” or “good.” In international comparison, Innsbruck-Tyrol scores particularly well in atmosphere, show, and event organisation compared to other World Cup venues worldwide.

“Innsbruck has established an international reputation as a sports city — a young, vibrant city surrounded by mountains with an alpine-urban brand identity. The climbing World Cup is without question a highlight on the event calendar, with a touristic appeal that is now supported by solid data from the impact analysis. On an emotional level I can confirm: anyone who has watched the Climbing World Cup once will come back — the overnight stays and viewing figures speak for themselves,” explains Innsbruck’s Mayor Johannes Anzengruber.

Media reach underscores significance

With TV broadcasts in 50 countries, livestreams on several platforms, and strong presence on social media, the IFSC Climbing World Cup Innsbruck 2024 achieved a remarkable media value that further strengthened the international visibility of Innsbruck and the sport of climbing.

With a total of 32 hours of TV coverage on ORF, 18 hours of live broadcasts on Eurosport 1 and 2, and coverage in 50 countries, the event reached an impressive international audience.

“The Climbing World Cup in Innsbruck is far more than a sporting event — it is an international flagship for our city. 560 athletes from 50 nations, around 17,000 spectators, and over 37,000 overnight stays show how world-class sport, urban life, and alpine flair come together here. Over 85 percent of guests stay overnight in Innsbruck — generating regional value added of over five million euros. And with its global reach, as the most-watched climbing World Cup in the world, it is also a true media showcase,” says Barbara Plattner, CEO of Innsbruck Tourism.
